Straight talk: this is a sealed-and-gravel tourer, not an off-road rig — it isn't insured for soft sand or 4WD tracks, and the 1500W inverter is sized for a kettle and induction, not air-con. What it does brilliantly is get four people comfortably around the WA coast.

The case for it

Four people, two minutes to camp.

The thing that makes a group trip work or fail is setup time. Two hard-shell tents that pop in under a minute is the whole pitch.

Most group 4WD setups mean one big tent, a long pitch, and someone doing it in the dark after a long drive. The Bakkie's two hard-shell rooftop tents go up in under a minute each, and the 270° awning deploys in seconds — so a family of four is set up before the kettle boils.

Underneath it's a proper tourer: a 2024 Musso with Ironman suspension, 300Ah of power, a real fridge and built-in water. Sealed highways and well-graded gravel access — the south-west loop, the Coral Coast, Margaret River, Cape Range — without anyone sleeping on the ground.

Bakkie or 2.0?

More battery, or newer build?

Same dual-rooftop-tent concept — but they're not identical. Here's the honest trade-off so you book the right one.

  • THIS ONE · FROM $160/DAY

    The Bakkie

2024 Musso, two hard-shell queen rooftop tents, Ironman suspension — and a bigger 300Ah battery with a 1500W inverter, so 3+ hours of continuous induction. Lower daily rate.

Pick this if: you want more battery for longer off-grid stints and a cheaper day rate.

  • THE NEWER ONE · FROM $180/DAY

    Bakkie 2.0

Brand-new November 2025 KGM Musso with 2025 safety tech, two hard-shell tents (Kings Tourer X + OCAM) and a larger 2000W inverter — but a smaller 200Ah battery (2+ hours induction).

Pick the 2.0 if: you want the newest vehicle and the bigger inverter. See the Bakkie 2.0

Verified reviews from this van's Camplify profile (20+ reviews) — families and groups of four, south-west and Coral Coast runs.

  • Our 4-week road trip through Western Australia with the SsangYong Musso and two rooftop tents was an amazing 5-star experience! Travelling as a family with two kids (0 and 6), we felt comfortable and well-equipped the whole time. The vehicle was reliable, spacious and easy to drive, even on longer distances. The rooftop tents were a real highlight — quick to set up, cosy, and a fun adventure for the kids. Highly recommended for families wanting a mix of comfort and adventure.

  • Highly recommend 'Bakkie' for groups of 2 or 4 to explore Western Australia. We travelled with 4 adults and were delighted. Johan gave a good introduction and shared travel tips. It's a nice truck to drive, and the solar panels, large battery and water tank mean you don't need powered sites — camp wherever you like. The sleeping cabins are spacious even for tall people and easy to set up: even with two left hands it's done in 2–3 minutes.

  • I had my family over visiting from the UK and four of us went for a south-west road trip in Bakkie. It was honestly perfect and so handy having two rooftop tents. Plenty of room for all of us while driving, everything is super easy to set up and take down, and the vehicle has everything you need for comfortably camping off-grid. Johan is a great host with good comms, available any time. 10/10 would recommend.

Best for

The trips this 4WD is made for.

Four travellers, sealed-and-gravel touring, and a strong preference for nobody pitching a ground tent.

  • FAMILY OF FOUR

Two adults + two kids, south-west loop

Perth → Margaret River → Albany. A tent each end of the roof, the 270° awning between, and a fridge big enough for a week — exactly the trip past families took.

  • TWO COUPLES

Four adults sharing the drive and cost

Two private queen tents, real storage for four, more cabin room than a Hilux. Split a longer Coral Coast or south-coast run four ways.

  • COASTAL EXPLORING

    Margaret River, Cape Range, Exmouth

Sealed approaches plus the gentle gravel access to coastal campsites. Surfboard spot on board; Lucky Bay and Wharton Beach drives are fine.

  • NOT FOR

    Off-road, soft sand, dunes

Not insured for off-road or soft sand. No Gibb River Road, dunes, river crossings or corrugated tracks. Sealed and well-graded gravel only.

FAQ

The questions groups of four ask first.

Anything else, ring the Offgrid line on 0422 428 584.

Q.01 Does the Bakkie really sleep four?

Yes — two premium hard-shell queen rooftop tents (1.5m × 2m each), brand-new as of November 2025, each opening in under a minute. It's ideal for two couples or a family of four (five seatbelts, baby-seat anchors, more cabin room than a Hilux). Need a fifth bed? A swag with inflatable mattress is an optional add-on.

Q.02

Same dual-rooftop-tent concept, different trade-offs. This original Bakkie is a 2024 Musso with a bigger 300Ah battery and a 1500W inverter — 3+ hours of continuous induction cooking — at $160/day. The Bakkie 2.0 is a brand-new November 2025 KGM Musso with 2025 safety tech and a larger 2000W inverter, but a smaller 200Ah battery (2+ hours induction), at $180/day. Pick this one for more battery and a lower rate; pick the 2.0 for the newest vehicle.

Q.03 How long can it stay off-grid?

A 300Ah lithium battery, two 160W solar panels on the rooftop tents, and a 1500W inverter that runs the kettle, toastie maker and induction plate — about 3+ hours of continuous induction cooking on a full battery, or days of normal use. The 85L standing fridge-freezer and 42L freshwater tank mean no powered site needed. It also charges while you drive.

Q.04 Where can a 4WD like this go?

Sealed highways anywhere, plus up to 10km of well-maintained gravel access to a campsite at max 60km/h (longer unsealed sections need approval before booking). Lucky Bay and Wharton Beach drives are okay. It does NOT go on dunes, soft sand, river crossings, corrugated roads, the Gibb River Road, the Nyinggulu coastal reserve, or the Shark Bay → Dirk Hartog gravel — and it isn't insured for off-road or soft-sand use.

Q.05 Price, pickup and what's included?

From $160/day, 4-day minimum (varies by date), driver age 24+. WA National Parks Pass on the vehicle, comprehensive insurance, and 200 km/day averaged across the hire (excess $0.50/km, no daily cap). Linen for four is an optional $80; a swag is $60; paddleboards/canoes $100 each. Pickup and return are near Perth Airport — Perth only, no one-ways.

Q.06 Who hosts the Bakkie?

It's listed by Johan, a long-time Offgrid Campers WA partner host (Camplify member since 2023, 100+ reviews across his fleet). Johan does the in-person handover and briefing and is contactable throughout your trip. Booking, payment and insurance all run through Camplify, so it's verified on-platform.
