Straight talk: the 2.0's win is being brand new with a bigger 2000W inverter — but it runs a 200Ah battery, less than the original Bakkie's 300Ah, so continuous induction time is shorter (2+ hrs vs 3+). It's a sealed-and-gravel tourer, not insured for soft sand or off-road.

The case for it

The newest 4WD on the lot.

If "brand new" matters to you — newest body, newest safety tech, newest tents — this is the one.

Fresh off the lot in November 2025: a brand-new KGM Musso with the full 2025 safety suite, two premium hard-shell tents (the Kings Tourer X queen plus an OCAM unit added December 2025), and a 2000W inverter. Four people, two private tents that pop in under a minute, and a 270° awning between them.

It's a proper sealed-and-gravel tourer — Ironman suspension, real canopy storage, built-in water. The south-west loop, the Coral Coast, Margaret River, Cape Range — without anyone pitching a ground tent or sleeping in an old vehicle.

2.0 or the original?

Newer build, or more battery?

Same dual-rooftop-tent concept — but they're not identical. Here's the honest trade-off.

Proof

Real trips. Real reviews.

Verified reviews from this exact vehicle's Camplify profile — Perth to Esperance, families and groups of four. (Not borrowed from the original Bakkie.)

  • We absolutely loved this vehicle! We spent 12 days camping from Perth to Esperance and couldn't have asked for a better setup. The dual rooftop tents are spacious and super easy to set up and pack down. Johan has thought of everything — we especially loved the induction cooker and easy access to charging ports. Communication was clear throughout and everything ran smoothly. We'd definitely rent from Johan again.

Nicole · · verified Camplify hire
  • We had a great experience. Johan provided everything we needed, including great advice on our route, clear instructions at pickup, and all the supplies we needed. The Bakkie was easy to drive with no problems. We loved the awning! First time using rooftop tents — fairly easy to set up and take down. The sleeping mats are a little thin, so if you're used to a soft bed you might want an extra pad. Would definitely rent from Johan again.

Michael · · verified Camplify hire
  • Great holiday! The van had everything you need. Johan was very responsive and helpful whenever needed. Will definitely use again.

FAQ

The questions groups of four ask first.

Anything else, ring the Offgrid line on 0422 428 584.

Q.01 Does the Bakkie 2.0 really sleep four?

Yes — two premium hard-shell rooftop tents: the flagship Kings Tourer X (1.5m × 2m queen, deploys in under 60 seconds) and a second OCAM hard-shell tent (1.3m × 2m, installed December 2025). Both have thick mattresses and ventilation. Ideal for two couples or a family of four; five seatbelts for travel. A swag is an optional add-on for a fifth sleeper.

Q.02 How is it different from the original Bakkie?

Honest answer: same dual-rooftop-tent concept, different trade-offs. The Bakkie 2.0 is the newer build — a brand-new November 2025 KGM Musso (KGM is the rebranded SsangYong) with a larger 2000W inverter and two hard-shell tents (Kings Tourer X + OCAM). The original Bakkie is a 2024 with a bigger 300Ah battery (so longer continuous induction cooking — 3+ hours vs 2+ here) at a lower daily rate. Pick the 2.0 for the newest vehicle and inverter; pick the original for more battery and a cheaper day rate.

Q.03 How long can it stay off-grid?

A 200Ah lithium battery, a 160W solar panel on the rooftop tent, and a 2000W inverter that runs the kettle, toastie maker and induction. On a full battery you get 2+ hours of continuous induction cooking, or days of normal use (the 85L fridge-freezer, lights, charging). It charges while you drive and from solar while parked — no powered site needed.

Q.04 Where can a 4WD like this go?

Sealed highways anywhere, plus up to 10km of well-maintained gravel access to a campsite at max 60km/h (longer unsealed sections need written approval before booking). Lucky Bay and Wharton Beach drives are okay. It does NOT go on dunes, soft sand, river crossings, corrugated roads, the Gibb River Road, the Nyinggulu coastal reserve, or the Shark Bay → Dirk Hartog gravel — and it isn't insured for off-road or soft-sand use.

Q.05 Price, pickup and what's included?

From $180/day, 4-day minimum (varies by date), driver age 24+. WA National Parks Pass on the vehicle, comprehensive insurance (sealed/gravel use), and 200 km/day averaged across the hire (excess $0.50/km, no daily cap). A $100 service fee applies. Linen for four is an optional $80, a swag $60, a Weber Baby Q $100, paddleboards/canoes $100. Pickup and return are near Perth Airport — Perth only, no one-ways.

Q.06 Who hosts the Bakkie 2.0?

It's listed by Johan, a long-time Offgrid Campers WA partner host (Camplify member since 2023, 100+ reviews across his fleet). Johan does the in-person handover and briefing and is contactable throughout your trip. Booking, payment and insurance run through Camplify, so it's verified on-platform.
